Neurological Responses To Change

October 7, 2026

As the journey of change in life unfolds, you can find yourself transitioning through many personal, evolutional states of consciousness. To manage your change journey, it’s important that you can identify your position on your personal change map at any particular point in time. As you begin to master your mindset, you can look towards NLP tools that will assist you to be more conscious of your unconscious process.

‍

One such tool is the Change Readiness Index (from the Spiral Dynamics brand). The Change Readiness Index provides you with a way of understanding how the energy of change flows between our varied experiences in life and what has to happen neurologically and otherwise for change to occur.

‍

The Change Readiness Index originated from the work of Professor Clare W Graves from New York.  Graves proposed that the capacity for change involves you moving between chaos and stability in cycles.  These cycles go on throughout your entire lifetime as you move through the various levels of your existence.

‍

The cycle of energetic change contains periods of chaos which assist you in growth and development along with periods of stability which assist you in consolidation and grounding. So, change is described in stages.

‍

In the first stage, you are at a point in your life where you are successfully addressing the challenges that your current environment is presenting to you. The coping mechanisms being employed match the environmental conditions, so your neurology is developed to match the conditions of life. Life energy flows through your neurology and so you naturally cope with life.

‍

During the second stage of change, you begin to experience certain frustrations and doubts as they manifest within your change coping system.  You know that something is wrong and yet you aren’t able to get full visibility of what that something is. What you are noticing is that the coping mechanisms that worked so beautifully for you in the past are no longer producing effective solutions to the daily challenges you are presented with.

‍

Now you have a choice. You either decide to do more of the thing that worked so well for you in the past, just doing it better, putting on the very British ‘stiff upper lip’ and just continue to get on with it, even if nothing changes as a consequence, or you may start to look at how to adjust the system while keeping its main features. This is what we call ‘First Order Change’.  When this happens, you are attempting to restore balance and improve your results within the boundaries of what you already know.

‍

It’s at this point you can have the realisation that your past structure was only your past structure and that there are other possible structures available to you.  Suddenly, a door opens for change and this is called ‘Second Order Change’ and you have the option or possibility of moving into a new kind of normality from here.  This is a critical point in your process and restoring a state of grounded balance it is not guaranteed, because you can fall into a stuck state which feels very unresourceful.

‍

This is a trapped stage where you feel completely stuck and without any resources to pull you out of the trough you have slipped into. This stage feels like the tipping point, the time for everything to re-set and re-programme. It is often at this point where you would seek out the support of someone who is able to guide you towards something different and new.

‍

Then comes a breakthrough. You choose to break away from the past and develop new strategies for coping. Once your new strategies are in place and operational, the energy that returns to your body is amazing, constructive and wonderfully unlimited.  This constructive energy ignites creativity and dedication to the new design of life and the behaviours that support the new order.

‍

Now your dedication to change is consolidated.  The new strategies and coping systems that you have discovered have resulted in a world outside perfectly controlled by the coping mechanisms inside.  You have made the return to the top of your game once more.

‍

As you move through your own individually unique change process, you learn to navigate to a new, more energetic and productive level of thinking by ensuring that you have the ability to neurologically and behaviourally cope with the external set of circumstances that are presenting themselves. You can now, once again, comfortably solve the difficulties provided by the environment of your life.

‍

It’s also important to recognise that in order for significant change to occur, it is necessary for a conflict of some sort, uncertainty, and doubts to make their presence felt. Only then will you experience new insights and alternatives of choice as new neurological connections develop. By removing your internal blockages, barriers, unresourceful emotions and inner conflicts your new thinking translates into new behaviours and strategies for coping. All these elements together eventually lead to consolidation and support of a new level of thinking and coping with life.  After a while the whole cycle repeats itself.

‍

Your awareness of the Change Readiness Index process will assist you to guide yourself towards an evolution of consciousness in a very structured and neurologically balanced way. Imagine what breakthroughs you are missing when you stay stuck and refuse to embrace change through the implementation of this tried and tested formula. You will ensure that you avoid causing yourself unconscious and conscious confusion by working with your neurological processing rather than against it. The Change Readiness Index is a positive and structured approach to coping with life’s challenges and at the same time, offers you the best of personal development experiences possible.
