Exploring Emotional Intelligence

June 23, 2026

Emotional intelligence is often viewed as one of the most influential concepts in modern psychology, leadership development and personal growth. While technical expertise, qualifications and experience remain valuable, there is growing recognition that your ability to notice, understand and control emotions plays a significant role in determining success, fulfilment and the quality of your relationships.

Emotional intelligence helps you to navigate challenges, communicate effectively and build meaningful, sustainable connections with others. In an increasingly complex and fast-moving world, these capabilities are more valuable than ever.

What is Emotional Intelligence and where did the term come from?

The term ‘emotional intelligence’ first came into widespread academic use in 1990 through the work of psychologists Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer. They defined emotional intelligence as a form of social intelligence involving the ability to monitor your own feelings as well as those of others and to use this information to guide your thinking and your actions. Their pioneering research laid the foundation for what would become a major area of study and application.

The concept gained international attention through the work of Daniel Goleman, whose bestselling 1995 book Emotional Intelligence introduced the subject to a much wider audience. Goleman argued that emotional intelligence could be as important, and in some circumstances more important, than traditional measures of intelligence (IQ) when predicting success in life and work. His work inspired organisations, educators and coaches around the world to explore the practical value of emotional awareness.

At its core, emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to recognise, understand, manage and effectively express emotions in yourself while also recognising, understanding and influencing emotions in others. It involves self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. These competencies allow you to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively, creating greater effectiveness in both personal and professional settings.

One of Daniel Goleman's most widely quoted observations is: "If your emotional abilities aren't in hand, if you don't have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can't have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far." This quote highlights the practical importance of emotional intelligence in everyday life.

Another often-cited statement from Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer describes emotional intelligence as "the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions." This definition remains one of the most influential descriptions of emotional intelligence and continues to shape research and practice today.

Emotional intelligence undoubtedly offers substantial benefits and there is another field of learning that extends these capabilities even further and that’s Neuro Linguistic Programming. NLP provides a whole system approach to recognising and understanding emotions, complemented by practical tools and methodologies that enable you to actively influence thinking patterns, emotional states, behaviours and communication processes.

In business, emotional awareness guided by NLP has become a cornerstone of effective leadership. Leaders with high emotional knowledge tend to communicate more effectively, build stronger teams and create environments where people feel valued, psychologically safe and motivated. When you understand the emotional dynamics within a team, you can navigate conflict constructively, increase engagement and develop greater collaboration, without putting people in labelled boxes. The ability to recognise and respond to emotional content supports decision-making, particularly during periods of uncertainty or change, where emotional reactions often influence performance and outcomes.

Customer-facing roles benefit significantly from awareness of emotion. Sales professionals (the buying process is based on emotion), managers, consultants and service teams who demonstrate empathy and emotional connection can build stronger trust with clients and customers, a level of trust that creates deeper relationships, greater loyalty and improved long-term results through repeat custom.

A powerful framework for helping individuals gain insight into their behaviours, beliefs and emotional patterns is an essential ingredient in coaching, counselling and therapeutic work. Excellent coaches understand emotional content and can use that deep understanding to support self-awareness, resilience and interpersonal effectiveness. When you become more aware of your emotional responses, you gain greater choice in how you think, communicate and act. This creates flexibility of behaviour and becomes the foundation for meaningful and lasting change.

We can also look at our education systems and how noticing and understanding emotion supports both academic achievement and personal development. Students who develop emotional awareness and self-management skills are often better equipped to handle stress, work collaboratively and maintain their motivation to learn. Teachers who understand emotions have what they need to create more positive learning environments and support the psychological safety of their students. As educational institutions increasingly recognise the importance of wellbeing alongside academic performance, NLP continues to play a growing role in learning and development programmes.

Personal development is perhaps the area where NLP touches every aspect of life. Greater self-awareness helps you to fully understand your strengths, values and behavioural patterns. Improved emotional regulation (state control) enables you to respond more effectively during challenging situations, strengthens relationships, while stronger social skills increase your confidence and ability to influence. As you develop your emotional awareness with NLP thinking, you often experience huge improvements in your communication skills, your ability to make well informed decisions, feel more resilient and be more satisfied with life in general.

Where emotional intelligence in its original form focuses primarily on awareness and management of emotions, NLP goes much further by providing structured approaches for transforming internal experiences. Through NLP, you learn how language influences thought and behaviour, how internal representations affect internal state and how behavioural patterns can be changed deliberately. Opportunities for personal change that extend beyond emotional awareness alone are a foundational part of NLP.

For example, emotional intelligence may help you recognise that you are feeling anxious before an important presentation. NLP offers patterns of thinking that enable you to shift the unresourceful emotional state into something more useful. Emotional intelligence may help you understand why communication challenges exist within a relationship and NLP provides new ways of using your language that help you to create greater rapport, understanding and become more influential. The two schools of thought fit together beautifully.

Within NLP, the combination of emotional awareness and the capacity for change is incredibly powerful. You will develop awareness, empathy and emotional understanding in combination with mastery of language, behavioural change and personal excellence. A comprehensive framework that helps you to understand yourself more deeply, connect more effectively with others and achieve greater results across every area of your life.

As workplaces, educational institutions and coaching professions continue to evolve, NLP remains an essential toolkit for success. Practical implementation gives you the ability to strengthen your relationships, improve your communication and enhance your personal effectiveness, securing the place of NLP as one of the most valuable competencies of the modern age. Emotional awareness through the application of NLP rewards you with practical strategies for creating meaningful change, unlocking potential and achieving lasting personal and professional growth.
